That's so awesome! I'm mainly wondering about the format and how easy it is to meet people. Are there interactive things or is it more panels? I did see that there's a writing group or something happening. Since it's in a hotel, I assume that people have meetups.
Check out official con site here for a look at 2018's schedule of events. These are official con events; there are always a lot of unofficial gatherings and parties too. The Three Patch Podcast always has a con suite (it was different this year- they had issues getting an actual suite and instead had adjoining rooms. They hosted a lot of events throughout the con, but a lack of a true suite was a downer).
Both times I went, I went to A LOT of panels and I enjoyed 90% of them. There were a couple of duds for me, but overall I had great fun at them. They range from more serious topics to off the wall cracky fanon, so there is just about something for everyone. Panels change up a bit every year too, so the 2018 schedule won't be the same next year.
So yes, LOTS of panels. There was also Mrs Hudson's Sitting Room, which was a quite space to knit, read, do crafts, and just chill out and take a breather from con. It can be completely overwhelming, so it's good to have quiet spaces to escape too. There were other common gathering areas too, mainly the lobby and the merchandise room (full of awesome stuff from fanart to books to jewelry and so many other things).
There was a Writer's Suite that I spent a good chunk of time in and that was excellent. Sherlock eps were playing quietly in the background while some people chatted, some people watched the show, and others wrote. It was very mellow and welcoming and I felt comfortable there.
I mentioned the lobby and that was the main congregating area. The hotel this year was new and very nice. The lobby/bar area had lots of good places to hang out, some more quiet than others.
As for meeting people, in the weeks before con, people would make intro posts on Tumblr. Who knows how that will go next year, but it was good to put faces to names. It was fun to run into people whose names you recognized. That said, I am quite introverted and found it hard to go up to people and introduce myself, and it was hard to be around to many people for long periods of time. It's awesome to see so many excited fans, but also exhausting! Thankfully my roommate and I were excellent con buddies and we encouraged each other to be social when we could and retreat back to the room when necessary.
Lots of people will post notices about room parties or have their own hang-out spaces (I remember there being Sherlolly parties, MorMor parties, you name it- there was a gathering for it.
I feel like I just went on and on. If there's anything else you want to know, let me know!
Thanks so much for the lovely info! This sounds so cool. I want to go! Hopefully I can manage it.
I'm quite introverted, too, so starting a conversation with strangers is hard, but it's one of those things that I'm working on so I can make more friends. It's nice to hear that there are places where you can decompress from that, too.
